Family in Need .......

Dear Guild Members, below is an article from the our school district. Londa will accept donations at our meeting on February 2nd. Particpation is optional

January 26, 2011
Dear RCS Community Members:
As you may have already heard, one of our families in the RCS Central School District suffered the loss of their home in a fire this past weekend Our school community is rallying to support them in their time of need. Parents, teachers and students have all indicated an interest in helping. We are trying to coordinate these efforts to better meet the needs of the family at this time. We have designated one of our school counselors to serve as the "point person" to maintain communication with the family to reduce the stress that would otherwise be put on this family.
If you wish to help in any way, please note the various items that could be donated immediately. There are also some fundraising events already planned, and perhaps more to come. Information will be sent home whenever possible and regularly updated on our RCS website.
The family has children in the elementary, middle and high school. Their immediate needs include:

Bedding, towels, hygiene products (shampoo, soap, deodorant), mattresses/beds for the family.
Gently used items for the kitchen, such as dishes, pots & pans, utensils, etc.
Please bring these items to the RCS Warehouse, next to the Bus Garage, between 7:00 – 9:00 a.m.
Gift cards from stores such as Walmart, Price Chopper, Marshall’s, and Malls – Colonie Center and Crossgates – would be most appreciated.
These gift cards could be sent to the main office of any school building where the Parent Organizations (PTA/PTO) will collect them and give them to the family.
A special fund for monetary donations, titled "The Ducatte-Mullin Family," has been set up at the National Bank of Coxsackie. Financial donations may also be sent to the A.W. Becker PTA, attn. Patricia Grogan.
If you would like to donate clothing, please be sure that the items are clean and smoke-free. These can be dropped off at The Spot Restaurant on 9W (closed on Mondays). Sizes are as follows:
Teenage Girl – Size 7 ½ pants; size 8 shirt; 9 shoe

Call for Help

From Londa -
Londa has asked me to send out the following request for young girls and women in local shelters and to the rape crisis center. The Grassroot Givers Group is organizing Girls Kits that have nail polish, lip gloss, nail cippers, emery boards, etc. These item fit nicely in a 1/2 gallon milk carton.........not plastic.

Brownie troops are collecting all of the items and they will also "decorate" the milk cartons to make the package look beautiful.

Fabric is needed for the milk cartons and this is where we step in. Any fabric that would be pretty for women and young firls ages 8 - 18 is appropriate.

The fabric dimensions should be 6 inches (height of the carton) x 17 inches (circumference of the carton) to wrap around the container. They are trying to collect 150 milk cartons. Please save what milk / juice cartons you can and also fabric and drop off at Log Cabin.

Why bother to make the containers you may ask. Reason is that Grassroot Givers donates approximately 500 to 600 kits to local shelter. So even if they purchased dollar store containers, it is better to use the $500 towards basic necessities such as deodorant, shampoo, laundry detergent, for example.

I don't know about you but it amazed me that the demand is so great.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give the group.

Service Day

We had a very successful service day Sunday November 7th. Londa, Phyllis, Monica, Sue, Ruth, Kellieann, Barb, Pat and Bonnie were able to finish up 20 preemie quilts. We had a great time chatting and of course we enjoyed a lunch catered by Lisa's favorite eatery!

October Minutes

Minutes for Make It Sew 10/6/2010

We had 14 members in our group last night. Linda Overbaugh is sick and Judy Frangella's Dad is in the hospital.

Bonnie collected dues from those still owing.
Balance of $874.40 in our treasury includes the dues collected tonight. We
have $400.00 outstanding from the Empire Quiltfest.

We raised $320.00 for our donation to Greenville Elementary Library in
memory of our dear friend, Margaret Alle. $150.00 was from the Guild.

On the topic of Quilter's Paradise, a sign-up sheet was sent around for people to help out. Donations for the Raffle basket will be taken right up until the week before the event. MaryLou Wahl will arrange the basket.

Project day will be Nov.7 from 10 to 3 PM. We will work on Preemie quilts, quilts for our service men and women, pillow cases, etc. Londa will have a few machines set up. Lunch will be provided.

A discussion was held on our December meeting which will start at 6 PM.. We will have our Chinese buffet and grab bag ($10.00)

Ideas for our Jan./Feb meetings were to have a guest speaker. Another request was for Bonnie to show us some embellishments we can use in our quilts. We are open for more ideas.

Ruth Robinson is going to find out about the "Adopt A Family" Program that we can do again this year.

Kathy Pilhofer got a birthday basket filled with wonderful goodies.
Londa Van Der Zee won the Guild basket.

We had a fun time exchanging our 5 inch Xmas squares which will be made into Preemie quilts and brought to our next meeting. Bonnie brought some delicious brownies to share with us!

Respectfully submitted.
